Item Quality and Tiers

From Common to Legendary, and the Exceptional and Elite forms of every base.

Quality

Every weapon, piece of armor and piece of jewelry drops in one of five qualities, shown by the color of its name.

QualityAffixesExtra spell slots
CommonNone+0
Magic1–2+0
Rare2–6+1
Epic4–6+1
Legendary6+2
  • Affixes are the item's magic properties: prefixes before its name and suffixes after it, at most three of each. A Magic item reads like "Arcane Long Bow" or "Long Bow of Carnage". Rare and better items get a name of their own. Browse them all under Affixes.
  • Extra spell slots push the item's slot count toward the top of its type's range, never past it (see Spells and Sockets).
  • A Legendary item also rolls extra critical chance, movement speed and attack speed.
  • Better quality makes an item worth more gold, and costs more to revive after death.

How strong an affix can roll depends on the level of the enemy that dropped the item, not on the item itself: the strongest affixes only appear on items from high-level enemies. Each affix lists the item level it needs.

Your Magic Find raises the odds of better quality.

Quality levels

Every item base has a quality level. Enemies only drop bases at or below their own level. Every item type has simple early versions, so you see each type from the start. Each item's page shows its quality level.

Tiers: Normal, Exceptional, Elite

Weapons and armor also come in three tiers. An item usually drops in the highest tier the enemy's level allows, and sometimes one tier lower. Exceptional and Elite items have the tier in their name ("Elite Long Bow"), stronger base stats, and higher attribute requirements.

TierDropsBase statsRequirements
NormalIts own level×1×1
Exceptional24 levels later×1.6×1.5
Elite54 levels later×2.4×2

"Base stats" are the base's damage, spell damage, defense and attack rating. Affixes come on top. Jewelry, potions and gold have no tiers.

Gambling

Some traders offer gambling. You buy an unrevealed item of a type you choose, such as an "Unrevealed Sword". It is rolled only when you pay: a base the trader's level allows, a tier, and a quality that is never Common. Gambling has its own odds, so Magic Find does not change them.
